History

Tipton County is located in the western end of Tennessee. It was established in 1823 and named in honor of Joseph Tipton. The county seat is Covington. Tipton County is situated along the Mississippi River north of Memphis, and along the southeast edge of the New Madrid Seismic Zone. It is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. Covington was named for General Leonard Wales Covington who was wounded in the battle of Chrysler's Field in 1813.
